Borrowed Muse – 120109

Sponsored by the letter L.

Seeing as how this is the first day I’ve had the house entirely to myself since Christmas, I decided I’d have a go at recording some bass parts.

I dug my trusty Tascam 2488 out of hibernation – hadn’t seen it in over 6 months I’d say… Of course it took me some time to remember how everything worked. I had to format the disc to get rid of all the old Raw Mesh material. That took a lot less time than I expected, of course it’s always easier to delete something than to record it…:-)

Here’s a picture of the Tascam as set up for recording – connected to my laptop…

Just before it became too late to stop the madness...:-)

I got my old Rickenbacker 4003 FG out of cold storage and set’ er up through the Line 6 Pod 2.0…

It may be FG, but it is politically neutral (you need to be Irish to get that one...)

My first task was to create a rough stereo mix of what I’d put together so far in CE4, and then import it onto the Tascam via USB. Of course, the first thing I realised was that CE4 had rendered the mix at 32-bit and the Tascam didn’t like that, so I had to do it over in 24-bit. Much better. The second thing I realised was that things go a lot quicker with USB 2.0 than they had with USB 1.0 on my old Dell laptop.

I recorded five different bass parts on the Tascam and imported them into CE4. They’re a bit rough and ready so far, but a certain amount of editing and sliding around of audio should sort a few things out. I did have an issue in relation to the rough mix, in that a harpsichord part hadn’t quantized, so in key areas I had difficulty in determining the beat of the track. Tomorrow, when I prepare a new rough mix including the bass parts, I’ll mute the harpsichord part pro tem and proceed, hopefully, to record some guitar parts.

Hopefully…

Regards,
